Traditional neon is glass tubing filled with gas: delicate, hot to the touch, and expensive to repair. Neon flex is solid and shatter-resistant, runs cool, draws far less power, and is safe to handle and ship. If a section of glass neon breaks, the sign is done. Neon flex is far more forgiving and far cheaper to run.

One practical limit is very thin or tightly detailed strokes, which are hard to render in a physical tube of light, so simpler, bolder letterforms read best.
