How CNC routing works

A CNC router uses a spinning cutting bit, guided by a computer program, to physically cut, carve, and shape the material. Because it removes material mechanically, it can handle thick stock, cut pockets and grooves, bevel edges, and produce three dimensional profiles that a laser cannot.

When CNC is the right choice

CNC is the better tool for thick material, contoured or three dimensional shapes, precision-fit parts, drilled and pocketed components, and large production runs. It cuts, routes, engraves, and shapes with strong control and clean results.

CNC versus laser cutting

The two methods complement each other. Laser cutting gives polished edges and fine detail on flat parts, while CNC handles thickness, depth, contours, and volume. A CNC-cut edge is typically finished afterward, such as with diamond polishing, when a clear edge is needed. Many projects use both methods, matched to what each part requires, which is one advantage of having them under one roof.

Files and materials

CNC work runs from vector and CAD files such as DXF, DWG, and AI, plus 3D formats for dimensional parts. Beyond acrylic, CNC routing handles many other rigid materials, which makes it useful for mixed-material projects.

Applications and repeatability

We use CNC for signage, architectural panels, retail displays, furniture components, dimensional lettering, and precision parts. On a large order, its real value is repeatability: the last piece matches the first, which is what keeps a production run consistent.
